The initial excitement over the innovative solutions being presented is quickly matched by feelings of exasperation when analyzing the training, integration process and investment that will be required in realizing the associated benefits. The challenge, therefore, is to simultaneously register a couple of key points when assessing these new products, platforms, systems and technologies. First, while the solutions being presented are new, the objective remains very basic. At the heart of any sound automation offering is the need to improve the efficiency of the spotlighted operation. This is where the scale of work being done by the targeted cell or machine should be carefully assessed. In some instances, a new controller, interface, software module or machine-to-machine communication platform might not make sense when comparing the associated cost, time and resources necessary to have a positive impact on operational efficiency. However, in most cases there will prove to be an efficiency gain. So validating factors like cost and any associated downtime shouldn't be difficult. Time, especially in the industrial sector, is money. Demonstrating time-savings over the long haul will lead directly to cost savings, which means greater profitability and the potential for expanding operations. At the end of the day, automation represents both the simplest and most complex collection of purchasing decisions an enterprise will encounter. However, by focusing on the basic, efficiency-laden principles of automation, choices can be made that help simplify the need and justify the accompanying resources. – Jeff Reinke
