Product Spotlight 22 IEN / DECEMBER '16 www.ien.com Packaging Sensor for Reducing Packaging Film Waste Butler Automatic (Middleborough, MA) has developed an enhanced register sensor for new and existing SP1 Automatic Film Splic- ers. The new register sensor improves upon the previous sensor's accuracy and reliabili- ty, and features software that more precisely controls the splice position, thereby reducing packaging fi lm waste. The register sensor in the SP1 Automatic Film Splicer uses regis- tration marks on the fi lm to provide an auto- matic, in-registration butt splice. In doing so, the splicer provides the downstream process with a consistent product pitch or imprint spacing, eliminating the need for re-regis- tering the fi lm in the process after a splice. The register sensor is critically important to minimizing fi lm waste. Other features include: • A wider range of sensing, proven to be more reliable in distinguishing between similar colors than the prior generation. As a result, manufacturers are now able to have print across the full width of the fi lm, even when the print is similar in color to the black register marks. • While the prior design required the operator to physically relocate the sensor in the in- web direction when adjusting between products of different length or pitch, the new control software allows the operator to achieve the same result simply by entering an offset value on the touch screen user interface. This enhancement allows operators to locate the splice in different positions on the fi nal product more easily. • Availability as an option on any new Butler SP1 Automatic Splicer, or for retrofi t with any Butler SP1 Splicer that shipped with the factory-installed Bi-Directional Regis- tered Splice Option and also has a touch screen user interface. www.butlerautomatic.com; 508-923-0544 Protect Goods from Moisture with Reusable Pouches According to Cortec Corporation (St. Paul, MN), mildew, mold, rust and an overall decrease in product effi cacy are all common effects of moisture, costing millions in returned or unusable products each year. Desicorr Pouches NW help pre- vent this damage by absorbing the moisture that builds up in- side packaging. Desicorr Pouches NW are designed to protect goods within a sealed moisture barrier package. They are easy to insert manually or automatically—no degreasing or cleaning of parts required. The optimal number for use may vary depending on shipping conditions and the nature of the products being protected. Successful usages include: • Semiconductors. • Electronics components. • Circuit boards. • Relays, communication devices. • Optical devices. • Military instruments. • Machine parts. Desicorr is a specially designed desiccant pouch that comes in a windowed or windowless form. The windowed version contains indicator spheres that change color from yellow to green to show when the desiccant is fully spent. This is important to know so that further desiccant protection can be added when needed. The desiccant can be reused if heated to release the moisture previously captured. www.cortecpackaging.com; 800-426-7832 Versatile Multipacker Maximizes CPG Flexibility PDC International Corporation (Norwalk, CT) has updated and reintroduced a versatile packaging "workhorse" based on its popular shrink labeler. The PDC R-300 shrink sleever is a high-speed shrink labeler engineered for continuous use. What's most distinctive is that it quickly reconfi gures from shrink labeler to multipacker, and easily back again. The system is compatible with rigid packages, cartons, bottles and cans; it accommodates special shapes with ease, and container capacities from 2 oz. to a gallon. The R-300 is a mandrel-style shrink sleeve labeler that opens and forms the sleeve into various shapes such as oval, square and rectangular. More importantly, it replaces the quick-dulling "spinning knives" typical on other sleeving machines with a proprietary heavy-duty knife assembly. PDC's knives deliver clean, consistent cuts for months, without "hairs" or the ragged cuts produced by rotary cutters. PDC blades last months, not days. The PDC R-300 is well suited to diffi cult applications, with available optional product han- dling that orients products in dual counter-rotating timing screws, then hands them off to servo-controlled gripper belts. This allows optimum presentation of packages for sleeving. www.pdc-corp.com; 203-853-1516 Shrink Film Supplies 30% More Footage in Same Footprint Sealed Air is introducing Opti Next Generation Shrink Films from Millennium Packaging (South Elgin, IL), a master distrib- utor for Sealed Air. According to the companies, the new fi lm supplies up to 30% more footage in the same footprint and at the same price as competitive products, yielding key cost, ma- terial use and production advantages. These benefi ts stem from patented Sealed Air 29-micro-layer technology that produces a thinner gauge with better tear resistance and better clarity than many thicker fi lms. The Opti NX also has a wider sealing and shrinking range than standard fi lms, making it the most forgiving fi lm on the market. End user benefi ts include: • Opti NX's thinner gauge and longer rolls, making it possible to wrap more packages per roll, reduce fi lm inventory requirements and increase production uptime by requir- ing fewer roll changeovers. • Lower transportation costs per packaging unit by accommodating 30% more fi lm in the same space with no increase in weight. • The ability of the thinner fi lm to use less heat for many shrink operations, further reducing costs by decreasing electricity consumption. • The ability to adapt to a wide range of shrink machinery, recyclability and FDA- and USPS- approved. Opti NX shrink fi lms are available in the U.S. exclusively from Millennium Packaging, a Sealed Air Master Distributor. www.optinxusa.com; 888-914-2244 Accumulator Increases Speed, Safety WSI Global (Grand Junction, CO) announces the EdgePack, a semi-automatic carton accumulator designed to dramatical- ly increase production speed and worker safety over manual case packing. The EdgePack is situated af- ter a folder/gluer in a carton converting line, where it turns the folded and glued carton shingle onto its folded edge. The EdgePack maintains the counted kick and lines cartons up for tray or slipsheet case packing, all while eliminating the repetitive wrist motion required by packers in manual case packing operations. It is designed to handle small-to-mid-sized straight line variety cartons. Other features include: • The elimination of scratching or printing disruption, as this innovative semi-automatic case packing machine relies on belts to move cartons. • Extreme ease of make-ready, with setup taking place as the carton shingle moves through the machine. • The ability to increase production speed up to 30% and reduce staffi ng demand, leading to a rapid ROI. • Can be confi gured to pack cartons with the glue lap up or down, and features cast- ers for mobility and fl exibility in moving between lines. www.wsiglobal.com/edgepack; 800-338-1455 (Grand Junction, CO) announces the EdgePack, a semi-automatic carton accumulator designed to dramatical- ly increase production speed and worker safety over folded edge.
