product spotlight Lubricants 28 IEN / OCTOBER '16 www.ien.com Expert Shows Lubrication Program Payback A t many companies, lubricants have traditionally been dismissed as ancillary in importance when looking at the key components of a successful predictive and preventative mainte- nance program. But according to Chris Kniestedt, a lubrication specialist for the San Francisco Division of Motion Industries, implementation of a world class lubrication program can successfully save a company thousands of dollars in costly repairs, mitigate equipment failures and avert unscheduled down time. Selecting the proper lubricant (with base oil viscosity as the priority), putting documented procedures in place and adhering to OEM recommendations are three key facets to achieving success. According to Kniestedt, here is a commonplace scenario of how this translates into hard numerical data: • 5% of an average maintenance budget is devoted to lubricants (fl uids, greases, aerosols, etc.). • Generally, 25% of a maintenance budget is devoted to repairs related to lubrication-related failures and issues. • Therefore, 30% of the total maintenance budget is devoted to lubricants and lubrication-related failures and issues. • Implementation of an organized predictive and preventative maintenance program can reduce this to 10-15% of your total maintenance budget. "Budgets will vary but regardless of the exact number, this will result in several thousand dollars in budgetary savings," says Kniestedt. In summary, lubricants and lubrication programs should be treated as powerful tools that can assist maintenance personnel economically and in the creation of a more effi cient, reliable facility, he explains. "When organized properly, everyone benefi ts." Long-Term Grease Protects Roller Bearings Subject to High Loads Klüber Lubrication (Londonderry, NH) has announced the availability of Klübertherm HB 88-182, a versatile long-term grease offering good corrosion and wear protection for roll- ing bearings subject to high loads and medium speeds at temperatures of up to 180°C. Klübertherm HB 88-182 is fully synthetic and based on a thermally stable base oil, polytet- rafl uoroethylene (PTFE) thickener and special additives. It closes the performance gap be- tween greases based on perfl uorinated polyether (PFPE) oils, which are suitable for high temperature and, for example, conventional high-temperature greases which soon reach their limit when exposed to high thermal loads. Features include: • Better degradability in the environment than PFPE-based products, so the grease is an effi cient lubricant with excellent high-temperature properties. • The ability to be used in rolling bearing applications in corrugating machines, rotary unions, generator bearings, conveyors, hydraulic couplings, smoke extractor motors, and ceramic ovens, as well as cylindrical roller bearings with a high percentage of sliding friction and sealing systems in the automotive industry. www.klubersolutions.com; 800-447-2238 Absorb-&-Lock Liquid Solidifi cation Absorbent New Pig (Tipton, PA) has introduced PIG Absorb-&- Lock Liquid Solidifi cation Absorbent to stabilize and solidify excess liquids that separate out from indus- trial liquids in drums, bulk storage tanks, roll-offs and other containers before shipping and disposal. The loose absorbent contains large, highly compressed particles that work in a time-release action to re- duce mix-off material sepa- ration during transportation. All-natural, biodegradable and more absorbent than traditional cob, sawdust or clay, one 35 pound bag absorbs up to 21 gallons of excess liquid. And, it is ideal for fuels blending, provid- ing 7,500 BTU/lb. with only 2.0% ash content. www.newpig.com; 800-HOT-HOGS Cutting Fluid Extends Life of Cutting Tools Walter Surface Technologies (Montreal, Que- bec) has released its new Coolcut S-50 sol- uble cutting fl uid. The new fl uid is designed to improve the life of cutting tools and re- duce heat buildup and friction on work pieces, even in tougher applications and on hard-to-machine metals. Benefi ts include: • Special EP additives in the liquid, which provide extra lubricity in order to cut materials such as high tensile steel and stainless steel, and titanium, as well as other metals like aluminium and copper alloys. • A very stable emulsion that will increase feed, cutting speed and production, so manufacturing shops can perform more cuts, faster, all while ensuring better tool life and smooth operation, without having to change liquid. • The ability to help heavy machining and manufacturing shops cut down on produc- tion time, which in turn helps them reduce costs and downtime. • Excellent corrosion protection, is safe to use and will not irritate the skin. www.walter.com; 800-522-0321 (Montreal, Que- bec) has released its new Coolcut S-50 sol- production, so manufacturing shops can
