8 IEN / AUGUST '16 www.ien.com problem solvers Problem Solvers Automotive Manufacturer Resolves Challenging Chip Removal Application A Detroit-based tier one supplier of parts to the automotive industry operates many Automated Twin Spindle CNC turning machines. The material the company turns creates a very gummy, stringy entangled nest of chips, there- fore the conveyors were jamming and failing to remove these large balls of chips. Damage to the conveyors was occurring and at least one conveyor incurred downtime daily that lasted an entire 8-hour shift. After researching its problem online, the main- tenance manager found a Jorgensen Conveyor YouTube video about the Munchman II Convey- ors and made a few phone calls. Engineers from Jorgensen Conveyors visited the company in person and took measurements of the part samples, measured the machines for conveyor fi t up and assessed the type of material caus- ing all the issues, which was a Mild Steel. MunchMan II employs two conveyor belts through the lower curve, incline and discharge sections of the conveyor. This enables successful removal of the large stringy balls of chips that had been jamming the old sin- gle belt conveyors on these turning machines. The conveyor also incorporates Jorgensen's patent- ed UVS-EcoLogic Control which provides constant load monitoring to protect conveyor motor and drive train components from damage in a "conveyor jam" condi- tion where excessive torque on the conveyor may occur. The control also features an automatic jam-clearing se- quence of conveyor operation for increased uptime. After a successful installation and run-off, the company After a successful installation and run-off, the company decided to put MunchMan II on all its existing machines and advised machine tool suppliers that it wanted it on any new machines ordered going forward. Worsley Plant Uses Hydraulic Testing to Improve Customer Uptime W orsley Plant was established in 1996 as a contract crushing company, pro- cessing stone at rock face or demo- lition sites on a pay-per-metric-ton basis. The company's job was to crush stone and remove it and the very nature of the work requires a heavy capital investment for very tight margin returns. Hence, any breakdowns and consequent down- time can be very expensive in terms of losses and equipment costs and size meant that only jobs of over 3,000 tons were economically viable with such large machinery. In 2003, the company identifi ed a gap in the market for smaller jobs involving crushing buck- ets attached to excavators. Worsley Plant em- ployed these successfully and later then went on to sell these crushing buckets to end users following demonstration. By 2006, equipment had become more advanced and so the company established a relation- ship with Webtec, manufacturer of hydraulic controls and testing equipment, which began with the purchase of portable hydraulic testers. By 2007, the traditional large scale crushing business was sold and the company's sole focus became selling and hiring crushing buckets via a dealer network. For Worsley Plant, an integral part of the installation is making sure the excavator is set-up correctly for the bucket to do its work. If the excavator isn't set properly, then the bucket won't function to specifi cation and the user may assume that the crushing bucket is at fault. All sales therefore include training and commissioning during which a Webtec fl ow tester is used to test the hydraulics. Excavators have, in the last few years, become far more effi cient and geared toward carrying attachments, where- effi cient and geared toward carrying attachments, where- effi cient and geared toward carrying attachments, where- as fi ve years ago an excavator was only an on-site digging tool. Now that it is more of a tool carrier, it comes ready with hydraulic circuitry to control a wide range of rotat- with hydraulic circuitry to control a wide range of rotat- ing, vibrating or sorting attachments and the pumps are more effi cient. The demand for fl ow from the excavator more effi cient. The demand for fl ow from the excavator to the attachment has increased, so now there is a need to test not only the inlet fl ow, but also the outlet fl ow as the 'regeneration' on some attachments with 400 lpm in could result in 800 lpm out, for example. Hydraulic back pressure needs to be tested too, so not just how much fl ow is coming in, but that the hydraulic system is effi cient fl ow is coming in, but that the hydraulic system is effi cient and can achieve the working pressures that are required for the bucket to operate correctly. The larger 800 lpm- Webtec tester enables Worsley Plant to do this easily. The company seeks improvements all the time and fi nds that the best way to ensure top performance is to carry that the best way to ensure top performance is to carry out the installation and commissioning on behalf of the client. They must ensure the equipment is working cor- rectly by adjusting the required hydraulic fl ow and pres- sures, then testing the back pressure prior to connecting the crushing bucket and demonstrating how to operate it. The approach shows Worsley Plant's professional cus- tomer service. They turn up, they know what they're do- tomer service. They turn up, they know what they're do- ing, they have the right tools for the job and they do it. ©Wildeck, Inc. 2016 WYL 1601-AD STORING LIFTING GUARDING Get the most out of your space Move inventory with ease Protect your facility EXPERIENCED PEOPLE CREATING EXTRAORDINARY PRODUCTS.
