SUPPLEMENT to ien FINISHING WORLD 20 IEN / AUGUST '16 www.ien.com news New Process for Plating on Ultem 2300, PEEK Surfaces – Without Chrome or Palladium L eonas Naruskevicius, of the National Center for Physical and Technological Sci- ences of Vilnius, LT and Mark Hyman of Alliance Finishing and Manufacturing of Oxnard, CA, in collaboration with Puma Chemical of Marble, NC have announced a new "patented" POP (plating on plastics) process. "Green POP" technology is a new approach for the metallization of molded or machined parts of Ultem 2300 and PEEK. The initial compositions of the pre-treatments for both Ultem and PEEK are free of any chrome and this process does not require Palladium. This new approach does not rely of the conventional method of roughing or blasting the parts to create a mechanical bond. Rather, it alters the surface of the plastic in allowing for a chemical bond to the metal. The advantage is a smooth surface with no damage to intricate details. This is especially valuable for machined parts containing threads and parts where aes- thetics, such as medical components, are a concern. Another advantage of this new technology is that the special activating solution used for the first metal layer formation deposits nickel in the conventional Watts Nickel bath, thus eliminating the need for Electroless Nickel. This strong, efficient activator is able to create eliminating the need for Electroless Nickel. This strong, efficient activator is able to create a dense layer of non-precious metals with up to 0.2 nm of thickness on any surface. This process produces adhesion that the company feels is superior to the convention- al method of nickel electrolessly deposited using Palladium. Parts plated with "Green POP" have been tested and meet or exceed the thermal shock requirements of MIL- DTL-38999 for composite-plated connectors. Those interested in learning more about this new process or acquiring access to it, can call Puma Chemical at (800) 211-7993, or email them at email@pumachemical.com.
