T he National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF) recently held their annual SUR/FIN Manufacturing & Technology Trade Show & Conference at the South Point Hotel & Conference Center In Las Vegas. Bringing to- gether the industrial surface fi nishing and coatings market- place, this year's event was guided by the mantra of "The Future of Surface Technology." With over 1,000 attendees from job shops and captive fi nishing operations and 200 leading suppliers and solution providers serving as exhibitors, the event offered a number of key takeaways for both this sector, and the industrial mar- ketplace as a whole: • Representative of many in the industrial sector, platers, fi nishers and coaters are carrying a steady business pace in to the second half of 2016. Business upticks in the aerospace and automotive segments are primarily being offset by lower-cost competition in Asia and Mexico. For suppliers, this means investing in new operations or partnerships to leverage growth oppor- tunities in these geographies. • New product introductions were varied, but those drawing the most attention seemed to be: ○ Finishing and coating solutions specifi cally for the aerospace market. While most other industry seg- ments are essentially fl at, aerospace continues to fl ourish due to heightened global competition and expanded defense initiatives. ○ Precious metal coatings. More is constantly being required of personal electronic devices and the control systems used in larger production and transportation equipment. These durability and reliability expectations translate to the use of more electronic components with coatings from silver and other precious metals. ○ Environmental improvement products – specifi cally those focused on water remediation and air fi ltration. More manufacturers are seeing these types of equipment investments as more than just a mandated investment necessary to be compliant with new regulations. The ability to recycle water helps lower utility bills, and air free of fumes and odors is proving to be a signifi cant employee retention tool. With an easier to justify ROI, the market for these products contin- ues to grow. ○ Material handling equipment that simultaneously makes storage safer and more operationally effi cient. ○ Market-specifi c software for managing business operations unique to job shops in the surface fi nishing sector. • A number of "Boot Camp" presentations were offered for attendees either looking to expand their knowledge of plating and fi nishing technologies, or to learn about the latest regulatory developments impacting chemical use, environmental controls and disposal guidelines. IEN's Finishing World was a proud sponsor of the event. Next year, the trade show and conference will take place June 19-21 in Atlanta. For more information, visit www.nasfsurfi n.com.
